How to turn a JPG logo into a vector file (and why auto-trace fails)

Convert a JPG or PNG logo into a vector file: why auto-trace and online converters fail, how proper redrawing works, what to send and which files you get.

You need a vector version of your logo, but the only file you can find is a JPG. Search for "convert JPG to vector" and you will find dozens of free tools promising a result in seconds. Sometimes they are good enough. Often they are not. Here is how the options compare and how to get a vector file you can actually use.

Option 1: online converters and auto-trace

Online converters and features like Illustrator's Image Trace work automatically. The software looks at areas of similar colour in your image and draws shapes around them. It is fast and often free.

Why auto-trace fails on most logos

The software can only follow the pixels it is given. It does not know that a letter should be straight or that a circle should be perfectly round. Typical problems:

  • Wobbly edges – straight lines and curves come out slightly bumpy, which shows clearly when the logo is printed large.
  • Too many anchor points – hundreds of unnecessary points make the file heavy and hard to edit, and can cause trouble on cutting plotters.
  • Melted text – small letters blur into each other or lose their shape entirely.
  • Wrong or extra colours – JPG compression creates shades that turn into dozens of small, unwanted shapes.
  • Background artefacts – noise, shadows and stray pixels become part of the artwork.

The lower the quality of the original image, the worse the result. And if your logo is a small file taken from a website, the quality is usually low.

When auto-trace can be enough

For a simple, bold shape with one or two flat colours, from a large and clean image, automatic tracing can give a usable result for informal use. Always zoom in and check the edges before sending it to a supplier.

Option 2: redrawing the logo properly

We use your image as a reference and redraws every shape with clean paths: straight lines are truly straight, curves are smooth, and repeated elements are identical. Text is rebuilt with the matching font where it can be identified, or redrawn letter by letter.

The result is a file with fewer, well-placed anchor points, exact colours and clean edges at any size. This is the kind of file printers, embroiderers and sign makers expect.

Auto-trace vs proper redraw at a glance

  • Speed: auto-trace takes seconds; a proper redraw takes hours, but you don't do it yourself.
  • Edges: auto-trace follows the pixels; a proper redraw follows the intended shape.
  • Editing: auto-traced files are hard to change; redrawn files are organised and easy to recolour.
  • Production: redrawn files work reliably for print, cutting and embroidery.

How it works at VETOR24

Every logo we receive is carefully redrawn. We don't sell auto-traced files.

What to send

  • The best image you have: the largest and sharpest version, even if it's a photo of a sign or a page of a PDF.
  • Any notes on colours (for example, colour codes you already use) or the font name, if you know it.
  • Anything you want corrected or left out, such as a background or a slogan.

What you get

With our logo vectorization service you receive your logo in AI, SVG, EPS and PDF, plus PNG and JPG previews, for €30, delivered within 4 hours. You see a preview before the final delivery, so you can check it first. Need it today? <>

Extremely complex artwork, such as detailed illustrations, may need an extra fee. If so, we tell you and confirm it before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

If you work with many logos

Print shops, embroiderers and agencies that receive customer logos regularly can use our business packs: 10 projects for €250, 25 for €480 (€19.20 each) or 50 for €800 (€16 each). The delivered files carry no VETOR24 branding, so you can pass them on to your own customers.

FAQ

Can I vectorize a logo from a blurry or very small image?

Often, yes. Because the logo is redrawn rather than traced, the designer can rebuild clean shapes even when the image is small. The more legible the original, the more accurate the redraw, so always send the best version you have.

Will the vector look exactly like my JPG?

It will match your logo's design, but cleaner: no blur, no compression marks and no jagged edges. That is why you get a preview to approve before the final files are delivered.

Is a free online converter ever the right choice?

For a quick mock-up or a very simple shape, it can be. For anything that will be printed, cut, stitched or used as your official brand file, a carefully rebuilt vector is the safer choice.

If you are stuck with a JPG and a supplier waiting for a vector, send us your image. We'll redraw it carefully and give you a file you can use for years.
